The 2011 Travers Stakes is shaping up to be a heck of a horse race with the confirmation that two Triple Crown champions will be there along with the winners of the Jim Dandy Stakes and the Haskell Invitational. Post positions for the Travers Stakes will be drawn on Wednesday, August 24th at 11am and will be critical in handicapping this race. Television coverage will begin Saturday, August 27th at 5pm EDT on NBC.

So what horses are entered and which horse will win the 2011 Travers Stakes? A million dollar question to be sure- it is also the sum of the Travers purse. Although the below line-up is of course very impressive, not one of these talented three year olds has won two back to back big races which makes it pretty much an open contest.
Favored Horses Entered in the Travers Stakes
• Stay Thirsty- Recent winner of the Grade One Jim Dandy Stakes and Belmont Stakes second place finisher
• Shackleford- Preakness Stakes winner and strong contender in both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes
• Ruler On Ice- Belmont Stakes champion and third in the Grade One Haskell Invitational
• Coil- Winner of the Grade One Haskell in which he beat both Shackleford and Ruler On Ice
Only Saturday will tell which horse deserves a shot at Horse of The Year honors and a big win by any of the top four here could go a long way towards that. However, there is also another very promising race on Saturday at Saratoga in the Grade One King’s Bishop. We will finally see the return of Uncle Mo and a win there could make him a real contender with the Breeder’s Cup still to go.
