Maria Sharapova will enter next week’s U.S. Open on a winning note, but she’s not the favorite on the tennis betting odds at the Bodog Sportsbook to take the title in Flushing Meadows.
Serena Williams, the 1999, 2002, and 2008 U.S. Open champion, sits as the 3/2 favorite on the odds board despite entering the tournament with a No. 28 seed due to her limited play over the past year.
Williams won the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford in late July and took the title at the Rogers Cup in Toronto two weeks ago, but had to withdraw from last week’s Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati with a toe injury in the second round.
Sharapova ended up winning in Cincinnati, beating Jelena Jankovic 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 in the final. At the Bodog Sportsbook Sharapova is the second-favorite at 5/1 odds to win the U.S. Open; she won this event back in 2006.
Petra Kvitova is next at 8/1 on the tennis odds to win the U.S. Open, with Victoria Azarenka at 9/1, Vera Zvonareva at 14/1, and both Li Na and Caroline Wozniacki at 16/1. Wozniacki is coming off a pair of first-round exits, falling early to Christina McHale in Cincinnati and to Roberta Vinci in Toronto.
Venus Williams is then at 22/1 odds to win her third U.S. Open title next week, although she skipped the Western & Southern Open with an illness. Kim Clijsters, who won the U.S. Open in both 2009 and 2010, won’t be in the field for the tournament this year due to a stomach muscle injury.
