The Michigan Wolverines are likely still licking their wounds after getting blown out by now top-ranked Alabama in their opener, but U-M has not time to dwell on that as dangerous Air Force visits Ann Arbor on Saturday. Michigan is a 21.5-point favorite on WagerWeb.com.
The Falcons opened with a 49-21 win over Idaho State, rushing for a Week 1 national-best 490 yards. Cody Getz ran for 218 yards and three touchdowns and Connor Dietz rushed for 74 and a score and had 142 yards passing. Getz needed just 17 carries to become the first Air Force player to rush for more than 200 yards since Chad Hall had 275 against Army on Nov. 3, 2007.
The Wolverines dropped from No. 8 in the preseason poll after their 41-14 loss at Cowboys Stadium to the powerful Tide. Senior co-captain and quarterback Denard Robinson completed 11-of-26 passes for 200 yards and tossed one touchdown. He added 27 rushing yards on 10 carries and scored the team’s first points on a six-yard TD run. WR Jeremy Gallon caught four passes for a career-best 107 yards in the contest, including a 71-yard career-long catch on Michigan’s first scoring drive of 2012. But the game was never in doubt as U-M was down 31-0 in the first half.
Michigan didn’t have starting running back Fitzgerald Toussaint, a 1,000-yard rusher a year ago, vs. Alabama due to a suspension for an offseason arrest. But Toussaint will play Saturday. However, starting QB Blake Countess was lost for the season vs. Alabama.
Michigan will meet Air Force on the gridiron for just the second time. The Wolverines won the first-ever contest, 24-7, on Sept. 26, 1964 at Michigan Stadium. U-M is 3-1 all-time against Mountain West teams, and is 6-0 against current members of the league. The Wolverines are 109-18-2 all-time in home openers. They have won 15 consecutive games at Michigan Stadium in the month of September. The one time Michigan faced an option-based attack last season was against Nebraska and the Wolverines did well.
Falcons are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games vs. a team with a losing home record. Falcons are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games. Wolverines are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games. Wolverines are 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 non-conference games.
