Florida State is trying to put its national championship hopes back together following a stunning loss to NC State last week and it starts Saturday against what should be an overmatched Boston College team that might be the worst in the ACC. FSU is a 27.5-point favorite on WagerWeb.com.

In one of the big upsets of the year so far, FSU (5-1, 2-1) lost 17-16 at the Wolfpack to drop from No. 3 to No. 12 in the polls. At halftime it looked like business as usual as FSU held a 16-0 lead, but NC State rallied to produce 17 unanswered and shock the Noles.

The NC State defense held the explosive FSU attack, led by Heisman hopeful EJ Manuel, to 218 passing yards and 3-of-15 of 3rd down. The Noles just can’t get past that fifth win.

Not since their national title-winning season in 1999 have they started 6-0. Florida State is 1-6 since 2007 when playing an un-ranked ACC opponent on the road when the Noles themselves have been ranked.

FSU is the only team in the country to rank in the top 10 of eight statistical categories nationally. The FSU defense ranks in the top 10 in five statistical categories: total defense (221.50 ypg, 4th), rushing defense (71.33 ypg, 5th), scoring defense (12.3 ppg, 7th), pass defense (150.17, 5th) and pass efficiency defense (91.88, 5th).

The FSU offense come into the week at No. 7 in scoring offense (45.2 ppg), No. 6 in passing efficiency (167.79) and No. 3 in kickoff returns (32.82 ypr)

Boston College (1-4, 0-2) blew a lead in the final minute as well last week and fell to Army 34-31 for the Eagles’ third straight loss. It spoiled a stellar day for BC’s Andre Williams, who finished with a career-high 191 yards rushing on 17 carries and scored twice.

Williams had 99-yard TD rush in the 2nd quarter. That was the 1st 99-yard TD rush by an FBS player since San Diego State’s Ronnie Hillman on Oct.29, 2011 vs. Wyoming.

QB Chase Rettig was 13 of 24 for 197 yards passing and was sacked five times, never finding any sort of rhythm. Ranked second in the Atlantic Coast Conference and 11th among all FBS quarterbacks in passing yards per game at 323, Rettig couldn’t generate any offense in the third quarter as the Eagles netted just 33 yards.

FSU leads the all-time series 6-4 and is 2-2 all-time versus the Eagles in Tallahassee. Florida State has won three of the last five meetings versus the Eagles, which includes the last two meetings. Florida State defeated BC 38-7 last season in Chestnut Hill and 24-19 the last time in Tallahassee.

WagerWeb.com trends: Underdog is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings. Road team is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 meetings.
