The have never won the ACC’s Coastal Division, but UM could take a big step toward doing so this season if it can beat Virginia Tech on Thursday. The Hokies are 2-point favorites on Vegassportsbetting.com.

The winner of this game will control its own destiny in the Coastal. Miami enters off a 33-20 home loss to Florida State on Oct. 20. Florida State scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth to break open a three-point game.

Stephen Morris, playing a week after spraining his left ankle, started and threw for 223 yards and a late touchdown for Miami (4-4, 3-2), which has lost three straight. Mike James had a touchdown run for the Hurricanes, who finished with 29 yards rushing on 21 attempts.

Star freshman running back Duke Johnson left that game with an injury but will be good to go vs. Virginia Tech. Johnson has been one of the top freshmen in the ACC, though his production has dipped in the last four games. He has one offensive touchdown in those games — and the last one came against NC State on Sept. 29.

Virginia Tech has dropped three of four, falling to Clemson 38-17 on Oct. 20. QB Logan Thomas had 207 yards passing and a 29-yard TD throw to Corey Fuller. He also rushed for 99 yards, including a 19-yard scoring run in the final quarter that gave the Hokies hope of a rally down 31-17. Virginia Tech (4-4, 2-2) has four losses before the end of October for the first time since 1992.

Thursday’s game will be the 30th football meeting between Virginia Tech and the University of Miami with Miami holding a 17-12 lead in the series. The two schools first met on the gridiron during the 1953 season, continuing on as members of the Big East Conference and now as members of the ACC.

The Hokies have won the last three games in the series, holding on for a wild 38-35 win in Blacksburg last year, winning 31-17 in Miami to clinch the Coastal Division in 2010 and pulling away for a 31-7 win in 2009 at a rain-soaked Lane Stadium when both were ranked in the AP top 10.

Vegas trends: Under is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings in Miami. Hokies are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 meetings in Miami. Hokies are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 meetings. Under is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings. Underdog is 8-3 ATS in their last 11 meetings. Road team is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 meetings.
