The 2015 SuperContest at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook promises to be bigger and better than ever as entrants are signing up at a record pace in hopes of potentially winning the first-ever $1 million grand prize.
In 2014, the SuperContest had a record 1,403 entrants and awarded more than $740,000 for first place to CH Ballers, who set the all-time mark by picking 76 percent winners with 64.5 out of a possible 85 points.
This year, the field needs to reach the magic number of 1,905 contestants for first place to be worth $1 million, with the winner earning 35 percent of the total prize pool. According to Jay Kornegay, the Westgate’s Vice President of Racebook and Sportsbook Operations, contestants are again signing up at a record pace but may ultimately fall short of that.
“We are ahead of last year’s record pace, and we fully anticipate a new record this year,” Kornegay said. “Our goal each year is to break the record number of entries. We are proud to announce we’ll have a new record number of entries and prize pool for the 2015 season. We anticipate approximately 1,700 entries for this year’s SuperContest.”
SuperContest Weekend in Vegas
One of the biggest drives for entries is SuperContest Weekend, which takes place August 28-29 at the Westgate. Events include a free college football and NFL handicapping seminar, a golf scramble, and a reception where attendees can win one of four free SuperContest entries by participating in a raffle.
“This is an event that gains in popularity similar to the SuperContest itself,” Kornegay said. “The SuperContest Weekend is an event for all levels of sports gamblers.
“There is something for everyone. First-time contestants have had a lot of success over the years in the SuperContest, and we also had our first female contestant win just three years ago. So history shows us anyone and everyone has a shot for the record cash amounts if they put a good season together. Who knows? The next champion has a good chance of being at this event.”
Two of the panelists for the NFL portion of the football handicapping seminar are Team OddsShark members Todd Fuhrman and Kelly Stewart. Fuhrman, who will discuss the NFC teams on his panel, got off to a blazing 14-1 start in the 2014 SuperContest and finished first in the group with 51 points.
Stewart will talk about the AFC teams and closed out last season on a 14-1 tear to win the $15,000 Mini Contest. Both are looking forward to offering their NFL betting tips to those attending the seminar.
“Always an honor to be included in such an important event for the gambling community and treat it as a privilege to share some of my thoughts for the season with the audience at large,” said Fuhrman.
“I’m very honored,” Stewart said. “I believe I’m also the first woman to be up there talking football, so it adds that whole aspect.”
