Soccer Predictions: Canada and Costa Rica Set to Battle in Group A CONCACAF Gold Cup
by Matt Cash @MattCashCapper
Canada and Costa Rica are in arguably the toughest group of the 12-team CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Canada has not had a lot of success in recent years in the tournament as they haven’t advanced out of the group stage since 2009. They are looking to get back to the heights they had through the first decade of the 2000s. In those six tournaments, they managed a win in 2000 (the only team other than the US and Mexico to win it all in the 13-tournament history), a third place, a semis and a quarters result.
They have not even been in first place at any point in the group stage since 2009, but that’s exactly where they find themselves now after the first round of games.
They beat French Guinea 4-2 on Friday, led by two goals from teen sensation Alphonso Davies. That +two goal differential gives them the edge.
Costa Rica has had a lot more success on the international stage with three World Cup appearances in the last four tournaments. That includes their surprise run to the quarterfinals the last time the tournament was held in 2014. They’ve made it out of the group stage in this tournament the last nine times, but haven’t made it out of the quarters since 2009.
Costa Rica beat the other favorite to make it out of this group, Honduras 1-0 on Friday. Marco Urena got the goal in the win. It was the nation’s first ever win over Honduras in this tournament.
Costa Rica definitely senses their opportunity for a tournament winning breakthrough as they’re fielding their stars, including Joel Campbell and Bran Ruiz while the US and Mexico are going with much younger players.
If there’s a downside to Canada’s result it’s the two goals allowed to French Guinea. Those goals came in a two-minute burst in the second half. The French side also missed out on some glorious scoring opportunities. The kind that one would except a side like Costa Rica would be able to exploit.
Cash It In: Costa Rica are -155 favorites, Canada +475 underdogs and the draw sits at +245. A draw here for Canada would make them the overwhelming favorites to win the group. Davies brings a dimension of offense that the Canadians are not used to receiving in the international game. But will it be enough to get the desired result against one of the tournament favorites? I don’t think so against a Costa Rican team that has set its sights on winning it all. Costa Rica 3-1.
