MLB Picks and Parlays: Yankees Look to Sweep Mets in Subway Series
It’s been a triple case of déjà vu as the New York Yankees are on the verge of sweeping the New York Mets in a four-game series this week. Each of the first three games has been decided by two runs or less with the Yankees scoring four or five runs in each win.
On Wednesday the Yankees edged forward in a tight game, breaking a 3-3 deadlock with a two-run seventh inning. The decisive hit came from shortstop Didi Gregorius with a two-out double that scored the winning and insurance runs.
After Jaimie Garcia gave up three runs in 5.1 innings the bullpen was dominant for the Yankees allowing just one hit over 3.2 shutout innings.
That should not be too surprising as the Mets have traded away their home run and RBI leader, Jay Bruce, and Neil Walker, one of their better hitters in the past week. That’s diminished their offense and the Yankees have assembled one of the best bullpens in all of baseball after a series of moves at the trade deadline. One of which was the pick up of David Robertson on his second go-around with the team. He struck out two of three in picking up his 14th save of the season.
The Yankees are averaging 3.33 RPG in the month of August. Their team ERA is 3.73.
The Mets are averaging 3.87 RPG in the month of August. Their team ERA is 5.12.
Luis Severino (9-5, 3.32 ERA) was hammered last time out by the Red Sox, giving up ten runs (eight earned) in 4.1 innings in a 10-5 defeat. It broke his sizzling streak of allowing six earned runs in his previous six games spanning 39.2 innings (1.38 ERA). The Yankees had won each of those games.
Steven Matz (2-6, 5.54 ERA) has seen his ERA rise from 3.05 to 5.54 in his last six starts. Last time out he gave up two runs in 5.2 innings in a 3-1 loss to the Phillies. It was the first time in his last seven starts that he allowed less than three runs. The Mets have lost seven of his last eight starts.
- NY Yankees is 4-2 SU in its last 6 games

NY Yankees is 4-2 SU in its last 6 games on the road
- NY Mets is 2-4 ATS in its last 6 games
NY Mets is 1-4 SU in its last 5 games
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of NY Mets’s last 5 games
Cash It In: The Yankees are -183 favorites and the Mets are +173 underdogs. I fully expect a bounce back game from Severino, especially against the weak offense that the Mets currently present. The question is what to expect of Matz. He is better than his current record suggests and I think he’ll throw a solid game, but not to the point of preventing the sweep. Yankees 4-3.
