MLB Picks and Parlays: Yankees and Mets Shift to Queens to Continue Their Subway Series
The New York Yankees won their first two games of the Subway Series with the Mets which has given them some much needed oxygen. They came into the series losers of two straight -to the Red Sox- and three out of four overall which put them well behind Boston for the division lead. But now these two wins have them at 6-4 in their last ten games while they search for their offensive mojo.
The New York Mets have now lost three of four and are 5-9 overall in August. They traded second baseman Neil Walker last weekend and home run and RBI leader Jay Bruce a few days prior. Add in the trades of Lucas Duda and Addison Reed at the deadline and those are four key veterans gone off the roster. They also just added starting pitcher Seth Lugo to the DL while they await the return of Matt Harvey who’s on a rehab assignment. It’s no wonder that wins are proving hard to come by.
On Tuesday the Yankees prevailed in their second straight tight game. They won on Monday 4-2 and then scraped by with a 5-4 win last night. Sonny Gray won his first game in pinstripes after coming over from Oakland at the deadline, but it was not without some more drama from closer Aroldis Chapman.
He gave up a two-run homer to rookie Amed Rosario before getting his 16th save. That follows on the heels of Sunday’s blown save when he gave up a game tying home run to Red Sox rookie Rafael Devers. Those were just the second and third home runs he’s allowed all year.
Gary Sanchez and Jacoby Ellsbury homered for the Yankees in the win.
The Mets are averaging 4.14 RPG in August and the team ERA is 4.82
The Yankees are averaging 3.57 RPG in August and the team ERA is 3.51.
Jaime Garcia (5-8, 4.50 ERA) was traded twice near the deadline, going from Atlanta to Minnesota to the Yankees. He’s allowed eight earned runs (nine total) in 10.1 innings in two starts against Cleveland and Boston. The Yankees beat Boston 5-4 in his last start.
Robert Gsellman (5-5, 6.16 ERA) has not made an appearance since June. He was rocked in his last three starts, allowing 17 runs in 12.1 innings of work and is working his way back from a hamstring injury. The Mets were planning to leave him in the minors to work on his game longer, but the injury to Lugo precipitated the call-up.
