MLB Picks and Parlays: White Sox and Cubs Continue Four-Game Set From Wrigley
The Windy City showdown continues on Wednesday with the first night game of the series as the teams flips stadiums with the Chicago White Sox hosting the Chicago Cubs. The White Sox have now dropped nine out of ten since the All-Star Break came to a close losing a 7-2 decision on Tuesday. They’re also 8-22 in their last 30 games.
The Cubs have won nine of 11 and three of their last four. Tuesday’s win was their first by more than two runs since last Wednesday’s 8-2 victory over the Braves. The win brought Chicago back into a tie with the Brewers atop the division.
The White Sox made a game of it for the first five innings, trailing 4-2 at that point. The Cubs scored twice in the sixth and once in the eighth to pull away. Ben Zobrist led off and managed to get on base four different times. Willson Contreras continued swinging a hot bat with four RBIs which included a three-run homer to open the scoring in the first inning. He’s now hitting .347 with seven home runs and 18 RBIs in 18 games in July.
The White Sox offense has completely evaporated since the break, as they’ve scored three runs or less in seven of ten games. They’re averaging just 2.9 RPG in that time. The team ERA in those ten games is 5.11.
The Cubs are averaging 5.82 RPG since the break which is great. But they must be even more excited by the 3.49 ERA after the starting pitchers struggled so mightily in the first half.
James Shields (2-2, 5.79 ERA) is making his sixth start after an extended stay on the DL. He’s struggled to regain his form, and given that he’s 35-years old that isn’t too surprising. He’s allowed 27 runs in 30 innings for an 8.10 ERA over that period. The White Sox have lost five of them.
Jake Arrieta (9-7, 4.11 ERA) has lowered his ERA by half a run in his last four starts. He’s allowed six runs in his last 25.1 innings over that period. The Cubs have split the games including an 11-4 loss to the Cardinals in his last start where he gave up two runs in six innings. The Cards rallied for nine runs in the eighth.
