MLB Picks and Parlays: Dodgers and Mets Meet up in New York Saturday Afternoon
Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets are two teams in the largest markets in major league baseball. It is a glamor matchup that has lost some of its luster this year. But one great reason to watch is the Dodgers march on history. They are currently on pace to win 114 games which as it stands would be the most in the National League since the Chicago Cubs set the record in 1906. It would also tie the 1998 Yankees for third most in history. Both of those teams went on to win the World Series. Number two on the list is the Seattle Mariners who won 116 in 2001. That team famously flamed out in the first round of the playoffs.
Los Angeles hasn’t advanced or won a World Series since 1988 so they have plenty of baggage to overcome and avoid joining Seattle as footnotes in history.
Coming into the weekend the Dodgers had won ten of their last 11 games. Their post All-Star game record was 15-3, but they have not played any team with a winning record. They also lost their ace Clayton Kershaw for 6-8 weeks in July, and if that’s going to happen it may as well take place at a time when a three-game series versus the Diamondback next week is their toughest competition until they meet Arizona again the very last three days of August.
New York is 49-57 coming into the weekend with six losses in their eight games. This series is their first at home after completing a 4-6 west coast road trip. They played 10 straight at home to open their post All-Star schedule and went 6-4, winning two each against Colorado, St Louis and Oakland.
The Dodgers are averaging 4.72 RPG since the break and their team ERA is 2.94. Their record is 15-3.
The Mets are averaging 5.1 RPG since the break and their team ERA is 4.80. Their record is 10-10.
Rich Hill (8-4, 3.35 ERA) has been trending upwards the last couple of months, pitching like the former ace that he’s been. The Dodgers won each of his five July starts and he sported a tidy 1.45 ERA with opponents hitting .171 off of him.
Seth Lugo (5-3, 4.53 ERA) was hit hard in his last start allowing five runs in five innings of a 9-1 loss to the Mariners. The Mets had won his previous three starts, but his overall ERA in July was 5.29 and teams hit .295 off of him.
