MLB Picks and Parlays: Red-Hot Cubs Face Sinking Brewers
The Chicago Cubs are doing a great job of putting a dismal first half behind them and announcing themselves as a threat to defend their World Series title. They are now 11-2 since the All-Star break after taking three of four from the White Sox this week.
Their opponents in Milwaukee Brewers were 5.5 games up, comfortably in first in the NL Central at the break, but they’ve been falling fast in the standings, now 1.5 games back of the Cubs for first. They need to regain their confidence in a hurry if they want to keep up with their rivals, and there’s no better time than during this key weekend matchup. Milwaukee is 4-9 since the break, 2-9 in their last 11 and just dropped two of three to the Nationals. They just completed a ten-game road trip and return home for six straight against their chief division rivals in Chicago and St Louis.
On Thursday Chicago won their third straight, beating the White Sox 6-3. Kyle Schwarber was the offensive hero with two home runs, a triple and four RBIs.
The Brewers dropped a 15-2 decision to Washington that included a record tying third inning where they allowed four consecutive home runs, and five in total.
The Cubs have averaged 6 RPG since the break which is second in the NL. Their team ERA is 3.33 which is third best.
The Brewers have averaged 3.92 RPG which is second worst in the NL. Their team ERA is 5.53, third worst over that time.
Jose Quintana (6-8, 4.22 ERA) is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in his two starts with his new team. He may have been trying to do too much in his first start at Wrigley Field, but he still fared well allowing three runs in six innings of a 5-3 win over the Cardinals. He has 19 strikeouts and allowed eight hits in 13 innings with the Cubs.
Brent Suter (1-1, 2.84 ERA) has made four straight strong starts since being reinserted into the starting rotation at the start of July. He has a 1.96 ERA in four starts this month with 20 strikeouts in 23 innings pitched. The Brewers have split his starts, escaping with a 9-8 win over the Phillies in Suter’s last game. Suter gave up one run in six innings of work.
- Chi Cubs is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games
Chi Cubs is 11-2 SU in its last 13 games
Chi Cubs is 8-1 ATS in its last 9 games on the road
- Milwaukee is 1-6 ATS in its last 7 games
Milwaukee is 2-9 SU in its last 11 games
The total has gone UNDER in 9 of Milwaukee’s last 12 games
Cash It In: Chicago are -156 favorites and the Brewers +136 underdogs. It probably helps Milwaukee to have a relative newbie like Suter on the mound in a pressure packed situation and I think he’ll fare well. But Quintana seems reborn with his new team and that along with that total team mentality that the Cubs are currently playing with seems like too much for Milwaukee to overcome. Cubs 4-2.
