MLB Picks and Parlays: NY Yankees and Minnesota Continue Their Three-Game Set on Tuesday
The New York Yankees rocketed up to the top of the AL East on the strength of one of the best offenses in the league complimenting a surprisingly good pitching staff. They cratered from mid June to the All-Star break in great part because of that pitching coming back to earth and the hitting taking a step back.
We’re now five games into the second half and the pitching seems to have returned with a vengeance, but they’re still waiting for the offense to wake up. They’re just 2-3, but have allowed a grand total of 13 runs in the process. They’ve also scored 13.
In their last two games -both losses, they’ve scored just twice. New York lost their series opener to Minnesota 4-2. This was a game that was all tied up at two after seven innings as the starters both took care of business.
Eduardo Escobar came up with a clutch pinch hit single in the eighth to score the winning run and Eddie Rosario got his second RBI of the night to score the insurance run one batter later.
The Minnesota Twins have now split their first four games since the break against Houston and the Yankees. That combined with the Indians four game losing streak heading into Monday’s games allowed them to cut the gap in the AL Central to one and a half games.
The Yankees are 14th in the AL scoring runs in July, averaging 3.46 RPG. They are 10th with a 4.38 ERA with a 4-9 record.
Minnesota is second in the AL scoring 5.00 RPG and are 12th with a 5.34 ERA. Their record this month stands at 7-7.
Luis Cessa (0-3, 4.18 ERA) will make his fourth start of the year and seventh overall appearance. This will be his first start since June 29th. He’s pitched 6.2 innings in relief since then without allowing a run. The Yankees have lost each game he’s appeared in and he’s yet to pitch more than five innings in a game.
Bartolo Colon (2-8, 8.18 ERA) was an All-Star as recently as last year. The 44-year old is hoping he still has something left in the tank in 2017. He’s made just one start since June 5th and gave up six runs in four innings. The Braves released him ten days ago and this will be his first start for the Twins. He pitched one AAA game five days ago allowing four runs in three innings on Thursday.
