A former All-American is joining Duke’s staff as a special assistant

Duke has added a second member of the 2010 National Championship team to its staff with Nolan Smith joining as a “special assistant,” effective immediately.

“This is a terrific addition to the Duke basketball staff,” Mike Krzyzewski said. “Nolan Smith is a true champion and a consummate example of the type of young man we strive to have in our program. It’s exciting to be part of his journey toward becoming a coach, and we’re so proud to have him on our staff.”

Smith follows in the footsteps of former teammate Jon Scheyer, who held the position of “special assistant” on Coach K’s staff until Steve Wojciechowski was named the coach at Marquette in 2014. Since Scheyer’s promotion and Smith’s appointment on Monday, the “special assistant” spot has been vacant.

Smith was a first-team All-American and ACC Player of the Year in 2011 and picked in the first round of the NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. Multiple injuries have brought Smith back to Durham for rehab, and being around the program has readied him for what he called a “natural” transition from playing to coaching.
