Arda Turan showed frustration of child-like levels when he threw his own boot in anger as Atletico Madrid
exited the Copa del Rey at the hands of Barcelona.
During a period in the fixture in which ill-discipline reigned, the Turkish international picked up his boot – which had come off during a challenge – and launched it right-handed past a nearby linesman.
The 27-year-old seemed incensed at not being awarded a free-kick and some media outlets have reported that his throw was aimed at the referee’s assistant.
That is unclear, as the flying object would have missed its intended target by some distance and referee Jesus Gil Manzano’s decision to only book the playmaker implies he saw nothing more than a standard show of dissent.
Turan is likely to escape any retrospective action as a result of the booking, which arrived on 48 minutes, shortly before he was withdrawn.
The incident formed part of an ill-tempered encounter in which players argued on their way to the tunnel at the interval and Atletico midfielder Gabi was sent-off before his side returned to the pitch.
With no end to the carnage in sight, Atletico defender Mario Suarez was dismissed late on for a second bookable offence as Barca reached the tournament’s semi-final with a 3-2 win on the night and 4-2 triumph on aggregate.
