MLB Picks and Parlays: New York Yankees Look to Keep Rolling against Texas
It’s been a good week for New York Yankees as they have won five of their last seven games against division rivals Boston and Baltimore. They outscored the division leaders 21-9 in their four-game series last weekend. Against Baltimore the spread was 22-12. The offense that was so good in pacing this team for the first half of the season may be returning just in time for the stretch run. And with one of the best bullpens in Majors at their disposal that may make them one of the teams to beat come playoff time.
As it stands they enter the weekend 3.5 back of Boston for first in the AL East and 3.5 games ahead of the Angels for a wildcard spot.
On Thursday they beat Baltimore 9-1 led by four home runs from four different players. They jumped to a 3-0 lead after one and pushed it to 7-0 by the fourth. The homers came courtesy of Aaron Judge, Chase Headley, Todd Frazier and Starlin Castro. Judge’s was his 39th which puts him second all-time for a rookie, but it was just his ninth of the second half. He’s ten off of Mark McGwire’s 49 in the 1989 season.
Texas Rangers is one of their competitors for a playoff spot and this weekend could be key to determining if they’ll be a threat down the stretch. They’ve also been on a good run of late as they took two of three on the road against first-place Houston and followed it up last weekend by taking two of three from the Angels. This week they went to Atlanta and took two of three there as well. They are now 2.5 games off the pace for a wildcard spot.
On Thursday they dropped a 5-4 decision to the Braves. Cole Hamels dropped just his third of the season as the Braves made a five-run second inning stand for the win.
Masahiro Tanaka (11-10 4.54 ERA) has been night and day in the second half versus the first. He looks like an ace again with nine runs allowed in his last six starts spanning 39 innings. Last time out he allowed one run in seven innings of a 5-1 win over the Red Sox. The Yankees have won his last four.
Martin Perez (11-10, 4.87 ERA) has been on a similar run with strong performances in five of his last six. In those five games he’s allowed eight runs in 34 innings. The Rangers have won all six. Last time out he gave up three runs in six innings of a 7-6 win over the Angels.
