Week 1 NFL Picks and Parlays: Seattle Heads to Green Bay In What Could be Game of the Week
The consensus top-two teams in the NFC heading into the 2017 season will face off in week one as Seattle pays a trip to Green Bay.
It should be a fascinating game on both sides of the ball. Seattle returns Russell Wilson behind a shaky offensive line and the same playmakers he had last year. Doug Baldwin took a big step forward last year towards solidifying himself as a WR 1 and TE Jimmy Graham looked a lot more comfortable in year two with the Seattle Seahawks. Thomas Rawls has been banged up and if he falters running the ball, new import and ex-Packer Eddie Lacy who apparently has slimmed down will get the chance to run with it.
The Green Bay Packers were shocked in last year’s NFC Championship game by the potent Falcons offense and that’s mainly because their cornerback depth was so thin and finally exposed against an elite team. Sam Shields their top cover man went down early in the season and that hurt them tremendously. He’s since been released and now it’s up to Kevin King and Davon House to pick up the slack. Clay Matthews also played through multiple injuries and is looking to get back to that elite level which helps anchor the defense. Julius Peppers went back to Carolina and it’s up to Kenny Clark and Mike Daniels to take over.
The reason the loss was such a surprise is because of the way Aaron Rodgers came on in the second half of the season. He seemed unstoppable and was just that against Dallas the week prior. He’s got the same elite cast at receiver as Jordy Nelson is in his second year back from knee surgery and Randall Cobb and Davante Adams help form one of the best units in the league. Now they’ve also added TE Martellus Bennett to the mix.
They get to go up against that legion of boom defense that got stronger in the offseason. Earl Thomas is back at safety after injuries derailed his second half. The Seahawks now have one of the best front lines in the NFL after the late preseason acquisition of Sheldon Richardson who came over from the Jets. Add him in with Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril and Frank Clark and this unit seems unstoppable.
- Seattle is 2-4 ATS in its last 6 games
The total has gone OVER in 5 of Seattle’s last 7 games
Seattle is 1-5 ATS in its last 6 games on the road
- Green Bay is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games
Green Bay is 8-1 SU in its last 9 games
The total has gone OVER in 5 of Green Bay’s last 5 games
Cash It In: The Packers are -3 favorites in what should be an incredible game. The real question is which team will come out in mid-season form right from the start. There is elite talent all over the field, but the consistency of Rodgers and his unit paired with the weak offensive line of the Seahawks does give Green Bay the slight edge. Packers 24-20.
