The Big Ten announced Tuesday they issued a public reprimand of Penn State men’s basketball coach Patrick Chambers for blasting the refs following Saturday’s 76-73 loss to Maryland. The Big Ten said Chambers violated the conference’s Sportsmanship Policy and fined the school $10,000 for Chambers’ actions.
Chambers reacted vehemently to a questionable call late in Saturday’s game. The call in question came with 1:50 left. As Penn State guard Geno Thorpe was driving to the basket, teammate Jordan Dickerson was called for an offensive foul on Maryland forward Evan Smotrycz. Dickerson fouled out of the game, but replays showed Smotrycz hooking his arm around Dickerson.
Chambers called the offensive foul on Dickerson the “worst call that I’ve ever seen in my entire life.”
“They’re pulling Jordan Dickerson down,” Chambers added. “…It makes no sense… It’s a joke the way we we’re officiated. It’s disappointing.”
