Apparently, the fight that hardcore MMA fans were calling for is happening after all. Instead of facing off against a returning Georges St-Pierre, Michael Bisping will attempt to defend his UFC middleweight crown against Yoel Romero at some point in the coming months.
Bisping and GSP were scheduled to fight but St-Pierre, who never fought at middleweight before, said he would not be ready until October at least. The 185 lbs division is incredibly top heavy with some of the better fighters on the planet all in the upper echelon of the weight class, which is why the UFC couldn’t wait on GSP.
Instead, Bisping will face the rightful No.1 contender in Romero. The “Solider of God” enters this title bout riding an eight-fight win streak that includes victories over Jacare Souza and Chris Weidman. Romero is an athletic marvel that pairs his Olympic caliber wrestling with powerful hands to dominate opponents.
Bisping has been perennially underrated. The Brit has been in the UFC for over a decade and is proven to be no easy out. His volume-based striking attack and stellar cardio mean “The Count” is at his best when he can wear down opponents throughout a lengthy fight.
