Oklahoma carried a 21-point lead into halftime against Baylor on Tuesday night. The Sooners were feeling good on Buddy Hield’s senior night and the fans were pumped because Blake Griffin was in attendance to have his jersey honored.
What followed after Griffin’s jersey was placed in the rafters as a furious charge by Baylor, erasing the deficit and nearly spoiling Hield and Griffin’s big day. Oklahoma holding on for a win became the story of the night, but that shouldn’t erase what was a special ceremony for former national player of the year Blake Griffin.
“I didn’t know what I was going to feel, what to expect,” Griffin said, via the Associated Press. “Anytime I come back here, it’s such a family atmosphere. It’s home. I’m a little bit overwhelmed with emotion and, like I said, incredibly honored to be able to be up there. Very appreciative of everybody.”
Blake Griffin “humbled and honored” to wear Wayman Tisdale’s #23. Now his #23 will hang in the rafters alongside.https://t.co/zzQ8gQwxOq

In the ceremony Griffin spoke about the honor of having worn the same number as Wayman Tisdale. Now the two players jerseys share the same honored space in Oklahoma basketball culture. Will Buddy Hield’s No. 24 join them in the rafters?
“He’s been unbelievable,” Griffin said of Hield, via Oklahoma basketball. “To see his growth from his freshman year to now has been unbelievable. You can tell he goes about his game, you can tell how he goes about life in general, the right way.”
