Xavier took another loss to a non-contender on Tuesday night and has fallen off the top line of the bracket.
Fellow Big Easter Villanova moves up in the Musketeers’ place. After losing to Creighton 70-56 on Tuesday, Xavier drops down to a No. 2 seed, settling into a spot left by the Wildcats.
Michigan State lost to Purdue in overtime after overcoming an 18-point, second half deficit to send the game to the extra session. It’s enough for the moment to drop the Spartans down to a No. 3 seed. They are replaced on the 2-line by North Carolina.
I get a lot of comments about why Maryland is only a No. 3 seed. The answer to that is that no team in the top four seeds of a region in this bracket has fewer top 50 wins than the three owned by the Terrapins (Purdue also has three).
Maryland also has the least number of wins over other at-large quality teams in the bracket among the top four seeds. It’s hard to justify putting them higher than they are right now until the quality wins start to pile up.
