Since their inception into the NFL in 2002, the Houston Texans haven’t exactly been known as a quarterback haven. The franchise has had six different starting quarterbacks, with forgettable names like David Carr, Matt Schaub, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Ryan Mallett, Brian Hoyer holding down the fort under center.
So when the front office decided to hand the reigns of the quarterback position to Brock Osweiler last offseason, the hope in the Space City was that the team had finally found its savior. Simply put, that hasn’t been the case.
Osweiler, who signed a four-year contract worth $72 million last March, was downright dreadful in 2016. The 26-year-old ended the campaign with 15 touchdowns, 16 interceptions and a miserable 72.2 quarterback rating. Osweiler also briefly lost his starting spot to Tom Savage at the end of the year before getting his job back in the playoffs after Savage went down with a concussion.
So, will Houston decide to board the Brocketship once again in 2017? Bovada has released odds on the signal-caller returning to H-Town, with the chances of him starting in Week 1 at +150 and the NO option available for a price of -200.
While Osweiler is far from the ideal choice, the reality is this is not a good summer for quarterbacks. The 2017 NFL Draft is shaping up to be a weak one at the position with no clear-cut blue chip prospects coming out of college, and free agency isn’t much better. I think the odds of the Arizona State product coming back to Houston shouldn’t be this slanted, but stranger things have happened in the NFL.
Will Brock Osweiler start in Week 1 for the Houston Texans?
