ESPN branded Big Monday years ago, and it’s worked out really well. But, just for a season, shouldn’t the network consider renaming it?
Forget Big Monday.
How about … Buddy Monday
Because, yeah, he did it again.
That’s video of Oklahoma’s Buddy Hield sinking a game-winner in Monday’s 63-60 victory over Texas, but that doesn’t even begin to tell the whole story. The whole story is that Hield struggled early and missed five of the first six shots he took before halftime, at which point No. 3 Oklahoma was trailing No. 24 Texas 31-22 inside the Lloyd Noble Center.
“I couldn’t make a shot,” Hield said.
And then he made a bunch.
Hield scored 21 of his 27 in the second half, and he hit the game-winner. The senior guard scored OU’s final 12 points and got a steal to secure the victory. And if you’re wondering what he told Lon Kruger in the last TO, here’s what he told OU’s coach in the last TO:
“I just told him I wanted the ball,” Hield said.
Then he got the ball.
Then he shot it.
Then OU won.
So the Sooners are now 20-3 overall and Monday’s biggest attraction. Hield got 46 points earlier this season on a Monday against Kansas, then got 27 points on a Monday against Iowa State. Now he has a 27-point performance — and a game-winning 3-pointer — in a Monday win over Texas, and he’s undeniably the leader in the Player of the Year race.
Big Monday is now Buddy Monday.
And don’t ever forget that the national championship game is always on Monday.
