Texas was supposed to contend for a Big 12 and even possibly an NCAA title this season; instead, it barely sneaked into the NCAA Tournament field. Butler, on the other hand, was supposed to struggle this season, but instead won 22 games.
Now the Longhorns, who are 0-3-1 against the spread in their last four Round of 64 games, take on the Bulldogs, who are 8-1 in their last nine Round of 64 contests, in the Midwest Region on Thursday afternoon. They were sitting as 1.5-point favorites over at BetOnline earlier this week.
Texas went just 8-10 in the Big 12 this season, finishing in a tie for sixth place. The ‘Horns lost four in a row in January, and four more in a row in February, but wins over Baylor and Kansas State to finish the regular season and a victory over Texas Tech in the conference tournament were apparently enough for an at-large bid to the Dance. Texas then blew a 10-point lead in the final minutes and lost to Iowa State last Thursday on a bucket at the buzzer, and in some minds enters this NCAA Tournament as one of the least-deserving teams to qualify.
Butler went 12-6 to finish in a tie for second in the Big East this season, then lost its conference tournament opener to Xavier. Actually, the Bulldogs are just 4-4 SU over their last eight games, and 3-6 ATS over their last nine. Butler owns wins this season over North Carolina, Georgetown, Belmont (which won the Ohio Valley Tournament), Providence and Xavier, and two over St. John’s, and all their losses except one came against teams that made the tournament.
