Cal is the latest school to make an apparel change as the Golden Bears have signed a new deal with Under Armour that will begin in 2017.
Cal is currently outfitted by Nike, but the new Under Armour deal is worth significantly more for a cash-strapped athletics program. According to the East Bay Times, Cal’s new deal is a 10 year, $85.6 million contract that will pay $3.5 million in cash annually, plus an additional $4.8 million in equipment and apparel.
According to ESPN, the current Nike deal only pays $150,000 in cash to Cal each year. That increase in cash received annually is significant for an athletic department that operated at an $8.5 million deficit in 2015, per USA Today’s athletic department finances database.
