California senior point guard Tyrone Wallace suffered a hand injury in practice this week and will miss the No. 4-seed Bears’ First Round game on Friday against No. 13 Hawaii, coach Cuonzo Martin told CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein.
Update at 1:15 p.m.: The school announced later Thursday that Wallace broke a bone in his right non-shooting hand and will miss 3-5 weeks of action, ruling him out of the entire 2016 NCAA Tournament.
Wallace, the team’s leader in points (15.3) and assists (4.4), missed five games earlier this season because of a broken right hand. While freshman stars Jaylen Brown and Ivan Rabb have lived up to the NBA-ready hype, Wallace has been a steady presence for this 23-win team and was last seen dropping 26 points against Utah in the Bears’ overtime loss in the Pac-12 Tournament.
