Do you bet on basketball? Do you like making money? Do you wish you were a foot taller and could play in the NBA instead of writing about it like me? If you answered yes to any of those questions, it’s about time you took notice of the Boston Celtics.
Very quietly, the Celtics have become a fantastic wager for OVER bettors, as Boston has gone above the closing total in an incredible 18 of its last 21 contests. Brad Stevens’ crew play host to the Toronto Raptors in Massachusetts on Wednesday, but the line and total were off the board at the time of writing. The Raptors’ defense has fallen off a proverbial cliff of late, evidenced by the Dinos allowing at least 100 points in 12 of their past 14 tilts.
The Celts are finally playing at full strength after suffering a litany of injuries in the first few months of the season. Boston has won four straight ahead of tonight’s matchup with the Raps, which has caused them to leapfrog Toronto for the No. 2 spot in the Eastern Conference. Led by Isaiah Thomas, the C’s have averaged a fantastic 118.3 points per game in the winning streak.
Boston averages 108.2 PPG and 105.7 points against on the year, so the recipe for consistent OVERs is clearly there. Thomas, who’s averaging 29.4 PPG through 44 contests, has scored 20 or more in the fourth quarter alone on four separate occasions this year, which is especially impressive when you consider nobody else has done it more than once. The 27-year-old has recorded 20 or more points in a game in 32 straight outings, the second-longest streak in Celtics history.
Avery Bradley (17.7 PPG), Al Horford (15.4) and Jae Crowder (14.2) are also doing their part in shouldering the scoring load in Beantown. The defense hasn’t been nearly as efficient, as the Celtics rank 19th in the Association in points allowed and 13th in opponent field goal percentage – another promising sign for OVER bettors.
If/when the offensive explosion slows down the Celtics will likely level out at the betting window, but sharp bettors would be wise to keep riding the OVER train in Boston for the time being.
Here’s a game-by-game look at the Celtics’ recent OVER tear:
It’s OVER ladies and gentlemen!
