Coach K, handshakes, bite marks in messy end of Duke’s loss to Syracuse

Duke’s 64-62 loss to Syracuse on Monday night dropped the Blue Devils to 3-3 in ACC play and created a fire storm of controversy on social media after the game.

The focus of the rabble-rousing was not on Duke’s limitations with a shorthanded roster, how they reacted to the zone defense or the inability to get a body on Syracuse forward Tyler Roberson (14 points, 20 rebounds) near the rim. The morning after the Blue Devils’ loss, all of the attention was on the final sequence and Mike Krzyzewski’s reaction.

Duke did a great job to put itself in position to win, thanks in part to a great effort from Marshall Plumlee (19 points, 17 rebounds) but caught the wrong end of two particularly tough calls in the final seconds involving Matt Jones.

First Grayson Allen missed a layup in the final seconds with Duke trailing by 1. Jones flies in for the rebound and ends up in a 50-50 fight for the ball with Malachi Richardson. There’s a foul called, but it’s against Duke after Richardson ripped the ball loose.

Krzyzewski was furious, but it got even more contentious when Jones rebounded the second of Richardson’s two free throws and attempted to get off a full-court shot with contact. If a foul is called, Jones gets a chance to tie or win with three free throws. No foul was called.

“It was an amazing ending. Amazing. Go see it, it’s literally amazing. It’s amazing basketball, let’s put it that way,” Krzyzewski said after the game, via WRAL. “We put ourselves in a position to win. Matt made a great play and…he wasn’t rewarded. He made a great play, and it’s amazing. It’s literally amazing. God bless America.”

Syracuse fans (and anti-Duke fans) were upset by Krzyzewski skipping a few players in the handshake line. Duke fans were upset because Matt Jones wound up in the locker room with a bite mark. There were LOTS OF LOUD NOISES.
