Over the last week, Kansas has beat Baylor on the road and Texas Tech at home to clinch its 12th-straight Big 12 title. And with that, the Jayhawks have now ascended to the top spot in the coaches poll this week.
Kansas garnered 31 of the 32 possible first-place votes in the poll to become the new No. 1. Villanova, after losing to Xavier over the weekend, only fell one spot to No. 2, followed by Michigan State at No. 3, Virginia at No. 4, and Xavier at No. 5. Below them comes Oklahoma, Miami and North Carolina, meaning five of the top-eight teams in the country are coming off of a loss last week.
That’s just the reality of this college basketball season, at this point.
The biggest mover in the poll this week was Utah, who jumped from No. 23 to No. 13 after beating the Arizona schools at home. More than their performance over the last week, this seems to be a reassessment of what the Utes have done this season. Utah is sitting just a half-game behind No. 10 Oregon in the Pac-12 standings, and very well may end up winning the league if they can hold their home floor against Colorado given that Oregon has a tough trip to Los Angeles this weekend.
On the other side of the ledger, Iowa and Arizona were the two biggest fallers of the weekend after losing a pair of games last week. Iowa fell seven spots to No. 15 after losing to Wisconsin and Ohio State, and Arizona dropped to No. 16 after being defeated in a pair of road games. Notre Dame, Dayton and Providence also fell out of the rankings, and were replaced by Wichita State, Saint Mary’s and California in the final three spots.
