After underdogs chewed the arses off the favorites in Week 1, there is only one lesson that the VSB Super Computer seems to have learned – pick more favorites.
After a 2-3 opening week in the prestigious Westgate Super Contest (which has a record number of registrants and a record prize pool), the computer is showing the biggest edges to Bengals (28-17 at home to the Falcons) and the Patriots (30-19 at Minnesota).
This on the heels of an 11-5 ATS week for underdogs which many sportsbooks described as the best weekend in recent memory. Did the Westgate Superbook mute the lines a bit based on the dog attack from Sunday? The computer thinks so.
It also likes the 49ers again (after picking them in Week 1) to handle the Bears easily 30-21 at -6.5, and the Seahawks, who are projected to cruise past the Chargers at San Diego 32-23 at -6
The computer will try to chase down fellow Team VSB participants Todd Fuhrman, who was one of 21 people to go 5-0, and longtime Vegas expert Ben Eckstein, who went 4-1.
Week 2 Super Contest Picks
Cincinnati -5.5 home to Atlanta – The Bengals won a tough road opener over Baltimore and get the Falcons – surprise winners over the Saints and due for a reality check – in their home opener. The computer says 28-17 and the Bengals are 7-0 ATS in their past seven regular-season games as home chalk.
Chalk up a win for the Bengals here.
New England -3 at Minnesota – The Vikings aren’t as good as they looked defeating the Rams and the Patriots are far from the team that got steamrolled after halftime by the Dolphins. We are predicting the 1-6 ATS trend as a road favorite will turn this week, since the Pats never lose two in a row and this is a short spread against a mediocre team.
The computer says 30-19, easily enough to cover three points.
Seattle -6 at San Diego – Until someone stops the Seahawks or shows they can score on the Seahawks, Seattle looks like a cover machine. The computer says 32-23, but we expect the Chargers’ points will come in garbage time.
The Seahawks were 6-1 SU, 5-2 ATS as road chalk in 2013 and they pick up where they left off here.
San Francisco -6.5 home to Chicago – The Bears lost their home opener to the Bills and now visit San Francisco where they are 0-7 SU and ATS over the years. The 49ers cruised in Dallas in Week 1 and didn’t really even gets their offense in gear as the defense mauled Tony Romo.
In a home opener with all pistons firing, this could be a major rout.
New Orleans -6.5 at Cleveland – Completing the square-looking chalk lineup is the Saints at -6.5 at Cleveland, in spite of the 2-6 ATS trend against New Orleans when they give six points or more on the road. The Saints do not want to start 0-2 and the Browns are quite accustomed to starting 0-2.
Honorable mention, but not in our Top 5 Super Contest picks – Jacksonville +6 at Washington. As a rule of thumb, pick underdogs in games between bad teams. The computer says 14-10 Washington, we think it will be high-scoring but the rule indicates the Jags will cover.
