Cowboys draft Baylor basketball star in hopes of making him a tight end

The Dallas Cowboys selected Baylor’s Rico Gathers on Saturday afternoon with the 217th pick in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. This is notable because Gathers is a basketball player. He hasn’t played the sport of football since he was 14 years old.

Gathers is 6-foot-8, 275 pounds — a specimen who projects as a tight end. And he wouldn’t be the first basketball player to do so. Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, Jimmy Graham and Julius Thomas are all NCAA basketball players who became NFL standouts.

Gathers averaged 11.2 points and 9.0 rebounds this season.

He also ran over one fan.
