Donnie Tyndall will not return next season as Tennessee’s men’s basketball coach, multiple sources told CBSSports.com early Friday morning.
An official announcement is expected soon.
This development is related to the ongoing NCAA investigation into the Southern Miss program Tyndall ran from 2012 to 2014. As CBSSports.com first reported Thursday morning, NCAA officials detailed for Tennessee’s administration on Thursday afternoon the allegations it plans to formally levy against Tyndall when it sends a notice of allegations to USM in the coming weeks. A source told CBSSports.com Tennessee’s administration would’ve preferred Tyndall remain in Knoxville, ideally; they liked him as their coach. But the punishment the NCAA is expected to assign Tyndall convinced athletic director Dave Hart that keeping Tyndall was simply impractical going forward, a source said.
“They just heard [about] too many violations [at Southern Miss],” a source said.
Tyndall finished 16-16 in one season at Tennessee.
