Stipe Miocic will put his UFC Heavyweight title on the line for the second time and he will be doing so against a familiar opponent. Miocic and challenger Junior Dos Santos squared off in December 2014 in a bout that saw the Brazilian win by unanimous decision.
That loss was actually Miocic’s most recent taste of defeat, as he has since gone 4-0 with every victory coming by way of knockout. The Ohioan is possibly the best boxer in the heavyweight division who very well may have the most devastating backing up right hand since Chuck Liddell. In addition, Miocic was a D-1 wrestler in college and has some of the best defensive grappling in the weight class.
JDS has only fought twice since his victory over Miocic going 1-1 with a decision win over Ben Rothwell in his last appearance. Dos Santos is great at finding his range at the feet and knowing when to commit his heavy hands to a powerful combination. ‘Cigano’ has underrated grappling abilities that, like Miocic, he uses mostly defensively.
Miocic is currently listed as a -175 favorite with JDS coming back at +145. Stipe has looked better now than he ever has in his career while Junior is closer to the end than the beginning. This should be a competitive fight, but it makes sense that Miocic is the favorite.
