FedEx St. Jude Classic Odds & Betting Preview

With the U.S. Open almost here, the PGA Tour has one more stop with the FedEx St. Jude Classic getting underway at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee this weekend.

Rickie Fowler is the +750 favorite at Bovada, with Brooks Koepka (+1100), Adam Scott (+1200), Francesco Molinari (+1400), Phil Mickelson (+1600), Daniel Berger (+2500), Russell Henley (+2500), Billy Horschel (+3000), Kevin Chappell (+3000) and Charl Schwartzel (+3300) rounding out the top 10.

Eight of the top 30 in the world rankings will take the field. The tournament marks Scott’s first trip to Memphis in a decade, and numerous unknown talents will be teeing it up. Braden Thornberry, the NCAA individual champion from Ole Miss, will test himself against PGA Tour competition for the first time thanks to a sponsor exemption.

Berger captured his first professional win here a year ago, fending off Mickelson in a rain-soaked final day of action. Playing in his first final pairing, Berger struck only three shots before storms hit and sent everyone back to the clubhouse. After the delay, he proceeded to collect three birdies over the final seven holes to shoot a 67 for a total of 13 under par and 267 on the weekend.

Interestingly enough, no winner of the PGA Tour stop preceding the U.S. Open has gone on to win the tournament. Only 11 men have claimed a major the week after winning the event the weekend before, with Rory McIlroy sitting as the last man to do so in 2014. The FedEx St. Jude Classic has a history of crowning champions for the first time, as Berger is joined by Harrison Fraser (2011), Harris English (2013) and Fabian Gomez (2015).

The course, which is built on a former dairy farm, is a par 70 sitting at 7,244 yards. The layout features numerous natural lakes, streams and ponds – highlighted by the par-3 11th hole which has drawn comparisons to the famed 17th at TPC Sawgrass due to its small island green which requires precision with short irons.
