Friday’s Ivy League Betting Preview (January 27, 2017)

College basketball is fully entrenched in conference play, which means that Friday goes to the brainiacs. The Ivy League has been competitive, though top-heavy, with four teams sitting at 10 wins so far this season. If you’re jonesing for some college basketball action today, here are the best angles and hottest trends for Ivy League action.

Harvard Crimson @ Cornell Big Red

Harvard enters this game with an impressive seven-game ATS streak. In six of those seven games, the Crimson closed as the favorite, which they will tonight against Cornell. Harvard’s defense has held opponents to just 61.8 ppg and a 38.5 shooting percentage in the past 10 outings.

Cornell has been consistently inconsistent, as the Big Red have gone 4-4 ATS in their past eight outings with a listed spread. The UNDER has been a solid play with Cornell’s mediocre offense, as the Big Red and their opponents have failed to top the total in three of the past four outings with a listed total.

Player To Watch: Matt Morgan has been phenomenal for Cornell, as the sophomore has averaged 19.7 ppg in the past 11 games. However, Morgan has been a turnover machine during that span. If he can keep the ball safe and keep up his offense, then Cornell can pull off the upset.

Dartmouth Big Green @ Columbia Lions

Dartmouth sits near the bottom of the Ivy League with a 3-12 SU record while opening the league schedule with back-to-back losses. The Big Green have only had listed lines in eight of their games this season while going an abysmal 2-6 ATS. The one constant for Dartmouth has been Evan Bourdeaux, as the sophomore has averaged 14.2 points and 10.4 rebounds in the past five games.

Columbia has been struggling as the favorites this season, as the Lions are just 3-4 ATS when giving up points. In the seven games as faves, Columbia has an average scoring margin of just +2.7 points (thanks largely to an 18-point victory over Howard).

Player To Watch: Luke Petrasek has been wildly inconsistent for Columbia. The senior has scored 22-plus points in two of the past four games while notching just single digits in the other two.

Brown Bears @ Yale Bulldogs

Brown will enter this game with Yale as the biggest underdog in Ivy League action Friday. The Bears opened as 12.5-point underdogs but the team has gone just 1-2 ATS this season when double-digit underdogs, with the lone cover coming as 24.5-point dogs. Brown has covered in each of its past two outings against Penn and Yale.

Though strong at the window, Yale has struggled for bettors, going just 1-4 ATS in the past five games with a listed total. Offense hasn’t exactly been the Bulldogs’ best skill set, with the UNDER hitting in their past three games.

Player To Watch: Steven Spieth has been the only reason to watch Brown this season and the senior has done everything he can to lift the team up in the past two outings. Spieth has averaged 26.5 ppg while shooting 64 percent in the past two.
