The Golden Ball betting odds are updated with the quarterfinals set and the player that had the best betting odds to win it before the tournament began in Lionel Messi still has the best odds.
These odds could change dramatically after Friday’s action and again after Saturday. Current Golden Ball odds courtesy of Bet365 (see also lines at ]custom:bodog-link]).
Messi (5-2) is tied for second with two other players in goals scored (4) and he has had to carry the Argentina offense. He has looked brilliant, but may have a hard time adding to his goal total facing a solid Belgium defense in the quarterfinals.
James Rodriguez (11-4) is the current leader in goals scored (5), but has a tall task facing Brazil in the quarterfinals. Still, he has looked great and Brazil has not looked like THE team to beat in the tournament.
Junior Neymar (7-2) has four goals so far and leads the Brazil attack. He has not gotten much help, but while facing a Colombia squad in the quarters who’s perceived weakness is their defense they have played well on that side of the pitch in the tournament.
Thomas Muller (9-2) has four goals and leads the German attack. He has help on offense and his squad has a tough road to the finals facing France in the quarterfinals and possibly Brazil in the semis. However, opposing squads cannot just key on him since the Germans have several other scoring options such as Miroslav Klose and Mesut Ozil, who each have a goal in Brazil.
Robin van Persie (12-1) and Arjen Robben (18-1) each have three goals in World Cup play and van Persie has played one less match having to sit out one due to a red card suspension. Both of these players are lethal for the great Dutch attack, which has a stiff test in the quarters facing a Costa Rica squad that has played stellar defense so far.
Karim Benzema (18-1) has three goals for the French, who have looked solid in the tournament so far. However, he faces a great German defense in France’s next match.
