Hawaii uses 21-point fourth quarter versus Fresno State to cover

USA Today Sports

The Fresno State Bulldogs entered Saturday’s meeting with the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors as 9.5-point favorites. Bulldogs backers would have been happy with the start as their team put up 21 points in the first quarter, followed by seven in the second quarter giving themselves a nice 28-point lead.

The Bulldogs took the 28-point lead into the final quarter when suddenly, Hawaii chipped into that lead and had Fresno State bettors sweating.

Hawaii scored three touchdowns – all on fourth down – to put up 21 points, ulimately losing the game, but miraculously covering the 9.5-point spread. The Warriors were a futile 4-of-18 on third down, but finished the 6-of-6 on fourth down.

Even Covers Managing Editor Jon Campbell felt the sting of this defeat.

“That was the worst backdoor beat I’ve ever experienced since i started betting college football over a decade ago,” Campbell said. “I couldn’t believe my phone when I checked the score this morning (on our beautiful new Covers mobile site.)”

Despite losing three-straight games to begin the season, the Bulldogs will now face Boise State in the Mountain West Championship game.
