Iowa State trailed by as many as 20 early in the second half but rallied to end the game with a 9-0 run and beat Iowa 83-82 in Hilton Coliseum.
It was Monte Morris who finished the run with this drive and floater to take the lead with less than 10 seconds left. True Hilton Magic.
The crowd sat stunned as Iowa’s Jarrod Uthoff had 30 points in the first half on 11-of-13 shooting with five 3-pointers. The cushion that the Hawkeyes built felt like enough for much of the second half until too many wasted possessions allowed Iowa State to climb back into the game and when Morris charged into the land he let it fly with confidence.
According to Jameel McKay, who interviewed with ESPN after the game while the students stormed the court, the confidence all comes from the atmosphere in Hilton.
“Personally, I’m the vocal leader on the team. They look to me for energy. I just try to be positive,” McKay said. “We went on a 5-0 run at the end of when you play in the Hilton everything is positive! We’re a veteran group, we’ve been down, all last year and we continue to come back. It just shows our character.”
For Iowa, this is a bad missed opportunity to steal a win from your in-state rival. The Hawkeyes haven’t won in Hilton Coliseum in more than a decade and now Iowa State’s winning home winning streak against non-conference opponents extends to 32.
