Hyundai Sun Bowl Odds

The Pac-12’s Arizona State Sun Devils will be looking to heat things up against the ACC’s Duke Blue Devils in this season’s Hyundai Sun Bowl in El Paso.

At one time this season some thought the Sun Devils might be playing on New Year’s Day with an 8-1 straight-up (and 5-4 against the spread) start to the year, but losses to Oregon State and Arizona both SU and ATS derailed those plans. The Blue Devils had visions of a return trip to the ACC title game, but they came unhinged in losses (SU and ATS) to Virginia Tech and North Carolina.

Sun Bowl Betting Trends: OVER is 7-2 past nine Sun Bowls . . . Underdogs are 6-2 ATS past eight Sun Bowls . . . Duke lost only two previous bowls, allowing 100 points total . . . Arizona State is 1-5 ATS past six bowl games.

Arizona State’s defense had its share of problems over the last month of the season, allowing an average of 34.8 points in its last four games. The Sun Devils are an even 4-4 this season as favorites.

The Blue Devils’ football program has made some tremendous strides over the past few years and it is in a position to post double-digit wins for the second straight season with an upset victory in this game. Their defense was ranked 20th in the nation in points allowed (20.6) and the offense averaged 32.5 points a game. Duke was 2-1 ATS as an underdog this season and the total has now stayed UNDER in six of its last eight games.

Sun Bowl Betting Trends: Nine of the last 12 Sun Bowls have played OVER the total . . . Underdogs are 6-1 ATS in the last seven Sun Bowl games . . .The UNDER is 7-3 in UCLA’s last 10 bowl games . . . Virginia Tech is 6-1-1 ATS in their eight bowl game appearances.

The 9-3 UCLA Bruins enter the Sun Bowl at No. 17 in the BCS rankings. The Bruins were 4-point underdogs in their last outing, but easily defeated the USC Trojans 35-14, posting their biggest margin of victory over USC since 1970 and winning the Victory Bell for the just the third time in 15 years. It was UCLA’s fourth win in their last five games, and their second win as underdogs during that stretch. The Bruins are 8-4 ATS overall, failing to cover as favorites only once this season, while covering the spread as 20+ point favorites on three occasions. The 8-4 Virginia Tech Hokies notched SU wins in six of their first seven games, but the team did not cover the spread until their fifth game of the season. The Hokies have won only twice in their last five games, covering only once. Overall, Virginia Tech is just 4-6-2 ATS, but has covered twice as underdogs this season.

The Southern Cal Trojans were a disappointment both SU and ATS for their supporters this season, so they’ll be looking to at least go out with a bang on December 31 as big betting favorites against Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl in El Paso.

[Sun Bowl Matchup Stats]

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the Utah Utes enter the Sun Bowl with very contrasting recent bowl histories. Georgia is 0-6 SU in its last six bowl appearances while Utah is 9-1 SU in its last 10 bowl appearances.

Both teams also have contrasting recent forms coming into the bowl game. Georgia Tech started the season 6-0 SU (4-1-1 ATS) but finished it just 2-4 SU (1-5 ATS) while Utah started off 3-4 SU (2-5 ATS) but finished strong at 4-1 SU (3-2 ATS). Georgia Tech’s third-ranked rushing offense (316.8 yards per game) will have a tough matchup against Utah’s seventh-anked rushing defense (98.3 yards per game).

Dual-threat quarterback Tevin Washington is the star of Georgia Tech’s option attack. Washington passed for 1,515 yards and 10 touchdowns (with eight interceptions) and rushed for 890 yards with 14 rushing touchdowns.

Highly-esteemed Miami and Notre Dame both struggled to identical records and will now meet in the Sun Bowl, with the Hurricanes as a slight 3-point favorite over the Fighting Irish in NCAAF odds.

Spread / Total (from Bodog)
Miami -3 / 47 Points

[Sun Bowl Matchup Stats]

After season-ending injuries to quarterback Dayne Crist and running back Armando Allen, Notre Dame Fighting Irish freshman QB Tommy Rees led them to a three-game win streak to close out the regular season.

During that winning streak, the Fighting Irish defense held opponents to just 233.3 yards per game, while giving up an average of 393.1 before that. Notre Dame leads the series 15-7-1 and will have to defy the Sun Bowl odds to earn another victory.

Miami lost back-to-back home games to finish the season, and that was enough for head coach Randy Shannon to get the axe last month. Jacory Harris was a strong starter at the beginning of the year, but injuries and a lack of playing time hurt his rhythm in the end.

All indications are that Harris will start, despite being replaced at times by Stephen Morris.

The Hurricanes came into this season with high hopes of reaching at least the ACC Championship, but after losses in two straight and three of their last five things are spiralling out of control for the lacklustre team. Of note, 7 of the past 9 Sun Bowls have played OVER the total. [ Current best OVER line for Sun Bowl is at 5Dimes. ]

Notre Dame missed the postseason last year and will be emotionally up for this game – combine this with the turmoil of the Hurricanes and you have a popular betting line with the underdog Fighting Irish.

College football betting could see an increase in totals wagers for this contest, as the teams combined to have 16 of their 22 games pay out to UNDER bettors during the year.
