The Illinois Fighting Illini , who haven’t won two games in a row since the calendar turned to 2015, announced Saturday that senior starting guard Rayvonte Rice and junior starting guard Aaron Cosby have been suspended indefinitely.
Citing cryptic violations of program rules, coach John Groce made the announcement just before the team’s home tip vs. Penn State.
“Hopefully they will make better choices and make the necessary progress to rejoin our lineup,” Groce said.
Coincidentally, both players have missed time recently due to injuries, Rice with a broken hand and Cosby a retinal tear in his left eye.
Illinois is 13-8 entering Saturday and still fighting to be on the bubble come NCAA tournament time. Rice, who started his career at Drake, is perhaps the most vital player on the roster, aside from Malcolm Hill. Rice is averaging 17.2 points and 6.9 rebounds this season. Cosby, a transfer from Seton Hall, is averaging 7.8 points and 3.6 rebounds.
