Mississippi State has fired Rick Ray as its men’s basketball coach.

“After much thought and deliberation, I have made the decision to replace Rick Ray,” said Mississippi State athletic director Scott Stricklin. “This has been a difficult decision, as I have the utmost respect for Rick, and I am highly appreciative of the effort he put forth in leading our basketball program. … However, the on-court results have not been satisfactory.”

Ray went 37-60 overall (13-41 in SEC games) in three years at Mississippi State. His Bulldogs finished 13-19 overall, 6-12 in the league this season. They recorded wins over Florida State, Vanderbilt, LSU and Tennessee before losing to Auburn in the SEC Tournament.

Ray was an assistant at Clemson when Mississippi State hired him.

This development leaves two openings in the SEC.

The other is at Alabama.
