NY Yankees -145
LA Angels O/U – 8
The New York Yankees are once again the toast of baseball, heading into Wednesday’s games with the second-best record in the Majors and an offense that just won’t quit.
They are getting surprise contributions up and down the lineup, led by 25-year old rookie Aaron Judge who leads the team in batting averaging, home runs and RBIs (.347-22-49). But there are six players with at least ten home runs on the team including some unlikely candidates such as Brett Gardner (.263-13-29).
The pitching staff is also doing their best to keep pace, getting those unlikely contributions from the starters to go along with an AL best 3.55 ERA.
They’d won six in a row coming into Tuesday’s games. That includes an impressive 5-3 win over the Angels on Monday night after the quick turnaround of a cross country flight. After trouncing the Orioles over the weekend, the Yankees are first this month averaging 8.18 RPG.
Los Angeles briefly managed to bring their record back to .500 as they battle for that second wildcard spot while trying to put up wins without Mike Trout in the lineup. They took two of three from Detroit and then Houston -on the road- prior to this series.
An offense that has struggled to put runs on the board most of the season managed to score 32 runs in their three most recent wins.
Overall the Angels are eighth in the AL, averaging 4.24 RPG. But they are up to 5.18 RPG in June.
The pitching staff is seventh, with a 4.10 ERA overall and fifth with a 4.27 ERA in June.
Michael Pineda (7-3, 3.39 ERA) has been one of those success stories for the Yankees this year, finally putting all that talent together with a healthy start to his season. He shut out the Red Sox over seven innings in a 9-1 win in his last start. Pineda has been much better at Yankee Stadium, posting a 1.96 ERA at home and a 5.96 ERA with a 1-2 record on the road.
Matt Shoemaker (6-3, 4.22 ERA) has managed to rack up the wins even with a relatively high ERA. The Angels have won five of his last six starts. Over those starts he has two where he did not allow a run and one where he allowed two in 6.1 innings. He allowed four runs in the other three starts including his last one versus the Astros. The Angels won two of those as well.
- NYY are 7-1 in their last 8 games following a loss.
- NYY are 7-1 in their last 8 Wed. games.
- Over is 8-3 in NYY last 11 games as a favorite
- LAA are 9-1 in Shoemakers last 10 home starts.
- Over is 7-1-1 in Shoemakers last 9 home starts.
Cash it In: The Yankees are -145 favorites, the Angels +125 underdogs. No doubt that Yankees offense is capable of going off at any moment. But Pineda’s struggles on the road, combined with the Angels producing when Shoemaker takes the hill, gives the Angels hope. Angels 6-4.
