MLB Expert Picks: First Place is on the Line as the Colorado Rockies Visits Arizona Dbacks
Picks and Parlays by Matt Cash @MattCashCapper
The most anticipated series of the week has first place Colorado Rockies visiting second place Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West. Just one game separates these teams (and the Dodgers). They have the two best records in the National League and are two of the hottest teams in the league coming into this series. They also happen to be two of the best feel-good stories of the season after years of futility for both teams.
The Diamondbacks have won seven straight games -and ten of 11- coming into this series, with the last five coming on the road. They swept a two-game set with Detroit and followed it up with a weekend sweep of the Phillies.
The offense has been clicking through the 11-game streak averaging 6.91 RPG. The pitching has been solid as well, allowing 3.27 RPG.
Paul Goldschmidt is putting together an MVP-level campaign and that includes hitting .400 with 18 RBIs in June. He’s one of four Diamondbacks with at least 10 RBIs this month.
Colorado in the meanwhile has been just as hot, with a 13-4 record in June. Most of the competition has been against below average teams, but they have taken five of six from Cleveland and Chicago this month. Their current five-game winning streak includes a four-game weekend sweep of the Giants.
The Rockies are scoring at a 6.29 RPG clip this month, which is tops in the National League. Their team ERA is 3.74 in June which only trails Arizona (2.84).
Nolan Arenado is putting together some MVP worthy numbers of his own and that includes driving in 21 runs this month. There are five Rockies with at least 10 RBIs in June.
German Marquez (5-3, 4.19 ERA) is having a solid second season in the Majors. He’s been hot for over a month and the Rockies have won six of his last seven starts. He had one poor start in the bunch, allowing six runs in five innings of an 8-5 loss to the Padres on June 2nd. In the other six he’s allowed six earned runs in 32.2 innings of work (1.68 ERA)
Zack Greinke (8-3, 3.00 ERA) has had an excellent bounce back season after such a disappointing first one in the desert. The Diamondbacks have won seven of his last eight starts. He’s had two rough outings in that bunch, allowing nine runs in 12 innings. In the other six he’s allowed eight earned runs in 40.1 innings of work (1.80 ERA).
- Arizona is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games on the road
- Arizona is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games
- Colorado is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games at home
- Colorado is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games
Cash It In: Very little separates these two teams at the moment and they are each at -110 to win this game. With a veteran like Greinke starting the series and a Diamondbacks team a Major League best 26-9 at home, that makes them the safer pick. Arizona 3-2.
