MLS Picks And Parlays: Philadelphia and New York Meet up in MLS Eastern Conference Clash
by Matt Cash @MattCashCapper
The New York Red Bulls travel to Philadelphia Union as the Eastern Conference teams meet in their second of three-regular season matches.
New York is currently holding down the sixth and final playoff spot in the East- barely. They are tied with seventh place New England with 20 points.
This is a team that has struggled to score consistently and to find wins over the last six weeks. Since the start of May they are just 1-4-1 and have been outscored 11-5.
Their 15 goals scored is third worst in the league and they have a -6 goals differential. Last year Bradley Wright-Phillips caught fire around this time and ended up winning the Golden Boot, scoring 24 goals. They are looking for a repeat performance, as he has just six goals on the year so far.
New York lost their last MLS match two weeks ago to Montreal, 1-0.
They hadn’t played since until a mid-week match this Wednesday in the US Open Cup. They beat their cross-town rivals New York FC 1-0 and will look to that game to help spark a run.
Philadelphia are in tenth place in the East with just 16 points in 14 games. At the same time, this is a team that has been playing much better of late and it all started with their first meeting of the season against the Red Bulls.
That May 6 match-up saw the Union race away to a 3-0 victory, which snapped a 15-game winless streak that stretched back to the previous August.
The game was scoreless until the 74th minute until C.J. Sapong took over. He scored three goals in 11 minutes to pace the team to victory.
Philadelphia is now 4-2-2 in their last eight regular season matches. The win over New York was the start of a four game winning streak. They lost their last two MLS matches, both on the road, to Real Salt Lake and New York FC.
On Wednesday they beat the Harrisburg City Islanders 3-1 in US Open Cup action.
The Red Bulls are 1-6-0 on the road this year and Philadelphia is 3-2-2 at home.
Cash It In: Philadelphia are +135 favorites, New York +195 underdogs and the draw sits at +240. The Red Bulls are looking for some revenge after their poor showing the first time these teams met. Philadelphia has been stronger of late, and both teams played mid-week. Add it all up and the draw is looking like a strong likelihood. Draw 1-1.
