Music City Bowl Odds

Two teams that stumbled to the end of the year will be looking to turn things around during bowl season when the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and LSU Tigers clash in the Music City Bowl on December 30.

The Fighting Irish defeated Rutgers 29-16 as a 14.5-point favorite in the Pinstripe Bowl last year. That improved Notre Dame’s record in their last five bowl games to 3-2 SU, but dropped them to 2-3 ATS. The Tigers knocked off Iowa 21-14 as an 8-point favorite in the Outback Bowl last season. That was LSU’s third straight ATS loss in a bowl game.

Music City Bowl Bowl Betting Trends: UNDER is 9-4 in the last 13 Music City Bowl games . . . Notre Dame is 2-10 ATS past 12 bowl games . . . Notre Dame’s last win vs SEC team was 2005 vs Tennessee . . . UNDER is 5-1 past six LSU bowl games (0-3 ATS past three) . . . LSU was 7-1 ATS this season as a favorite.

The Irish couldn’t buy a win at the end of the regular season, dropping four straight games. Notre Dame started the season 6-0, but picked up just one win in their next six games and only covered the spread once. Totals bettors could have cleaned up on the Irish if they stuck with the OVER; in their last seven games Notre Dame went 6-0-1 OVER.

The Tigers defeated Texas A&M 23-17 as a 3-point favorite in their regular season finale to snap a two-game losing streak. LSU was a smart pick for bettors late in the season with a 4-1-1 ATS record in their last six games. Totals bettors who stuck with the UNDER also saw profits, as the Tigers went UNDER the total in five straight games to end the regular season.

Music City Bowl Betting Trends: The UNDER is 8-4 in the last 12 Music City Bowl games . . . Ole Miss are 7-1-1 ATS in their last nine bowl games . . . Georgia Tech are 1-5 ATS in their last six bowl game appearances . . . The OVER is 7-1 in the Yellow Jackets’ last eight games in 2013.

The 7-5 Mississippi Rebels are hoping to rebound from a heartbreaking 17-10 overtime loss to cross-state rivals Mississippi State in the annual Egg Bowl. It has been a roller coaster season for the Rebels, winning their first three SU, then losing three, followed by a four-game win streak leading up to their current two-game drought. Their performance ATS has largely coincided with their win/loss record. With only two exceptions this season, the Rebels have covered when they’ve won and haven’t when they’ve lost. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets also arrive in Nashville with a 7-5 record SU. The Jackets have won four of their last six SU; winning the four games in which they were favored, including a 66-7 blowout of Alabama A&M. But Georgia Tech is winless this season as underdogs, and also failed to cover in any of those four games.

The Vanderbilt Commodores are sitting as the favorites on the odds to win the Music City Bowl at Nashville’s LP Field on December 31, and they’ll be taking on an N.C. State team that was below .500 against the spread on the season.

[Music City Bowl Matchup Stats]

The Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons meet in the Music City Bowl as each did just enough to earn bowl eligibility at 6-6 SU.

After starting the year off strong at 4-1 SU and ATS including an outright upset over Florida State, Wake Forest hit a rut and went just 2-5 SU (3-4 ATS) over its last seven games. Mississippi State took an unexpected step backwards this year after an impressive 9-4 SU campaign in 2010. The Bulldogs did finish the second half of the season with a 5-1 ATS record despite a 3-3 SU record.

Senior running back Vick Ballard was one of the only consistent contributors for Mississippi State’s offense. Ballard finished the year with1,009 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns on 179 carries.

It was a very trying year at North Carolina with injuries and suspensions, but in its third straight bowl appearance most sportsbooks give the Tar Heels a slight 2-point edge over the Tennessee Volunteers in the Music City Bowl odds.

[Music City Bowl Matchup Stats]

North Carolina had thought it was going to contend for its conference title, but with suspensions and injuries the defense that was so strong was suddenly hampered. They surrendered 338.5 yards per game, which was good for just fourth in the conference.

The Tar Heels had the confidence of most college football betting enthusiasts until the team came falling apart, and it showed with them having so many teams on the ropes but failing to close out games. It will be up to quarterback T.J. Yates to establish his rhythm early if North Carolina is to beat a hot Tennessee team.

Yates was the primary reason for a bowl appearance by the Tar Heels. He was second in pass efficiency and second in passing yards per game.

The NCAAF odds don’t line up for Tennessee in this game, but after a sluggish 2-6 start and nearly playing its way out of a bowl game the Volunteers snapped off four straight to get into the Music City Bowl.

Tennessee has 21 freshman players on its roster, and first-year quarterback Tyler Bray was on fire down the stretch, connecting for 12 touchdown passes in his last four starts to propel the Volunteers.

While the betting lines favor North Carolina, one cannot look past the very distinct possibility of an upset in this game with such a small spread, which even has oddsmakers wondering.

The Volunteers’ youth combined with their high-scoring games, which paid out to OVER bettors eight times this season, might be of interest to totals bettors.
