NBA underdogs are barking loud for basketball bettors

In the two days following the NBA All-Star break, betting favorites went 11-4 ATS (with one game closing pick’em), covering the spread at a 73 percent clip. That brief trend had the shelf life of a Buss Brothers’ hostile takeover, and gave way to another incredible betting trend playing out on the NBA hardwood over the past week.

Heading into Saturday’s action, NBA underdogs have gone an amazing 36-16-1 ATS (25-28 SU) in the past seven days – a 69 percent winner. That was punctuated by a 7-3 ATS night for pups Friday, with all but the Lakers, Hawks, and Nets making the most of the extra points from oddsmakers.

The NBA dogs barking the loudest during this seven-day stretch are home underdogs, which are 15-6-1 ATS (71.43 percent) over the past week. That includes a 6-2 ATS record from home pups Friday night.

There are four teams currently getting the points at home Saturday – all coming in the earlier slate of games (6-8:30 p.m. ET): Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Miami and Chicago. The Bulls have been cashing in all season as home pups, posting a 7-2 ATS record when getting the points inside the United Center. Chicago is set at +2 hosting the Los Angeles Clippers Saturday.

Small underdogs have been the most profitable in this seven-day run, with teams getting 2.5 points or less boasting a 12-4 ATS count (75 percent). Larger underdogs, those getting double-digit points from the bookies, have also been a solid bet in this span, with a 6-2 ATS mark.

Saturday’s slate features three games with spreads of 2.5 points or less (Toronto at Milwaukee +1, Cleveland at Miami +1, L.A. Clippers at Chicago +2) and one with a double-digit line (Brooklyn at Portland -11).

On the season, NBA betting underdogs are 461-445-12 ATS (51%) with home underdogs covering at a 53 percent rate (173-153-3 ATS). Out of 30 NBA teams, only four have been profitable when getting the points over the course of the season: San Antonio, Houston, Memphis and Atlanta. And only the Spurs, at 4-1 ATS in the rare role of underdogs, have a winning percentage above 54.5 percent.
