NCAA clears UCF’s Tacko Fall to compete as a freshman this season

The NCAA has cleared UCF freshman Tacko Fall for freshman eligibility, UCF coach Donnie Jones told CBS Sports on Friday morning.

“Got the call this morning,” Jones said. “So thankful.”

Fall is a native of Senegal who had a 3.6 GPA in his final two years of high school and is now an engineering major at UCF. By all accounts, he’s an intelligent young man who is genuinely tryng to use basketball to further his education and escape his impoverished background. But the NCAA had concerns about his high school and declined to initially clear him. So a social media campaign — #FreeTacko — ensued in recent weeks.

And though it’s unclear if that — or the fact that Fall threatened to sue the NCAA — had any influence on the 7-foot-6 center being cleared, it also doesn’t matter. He’s cleared now, for whatever reason. And he’s expected to play Saturday when UCF visits Davidson.
