NFL Picks and Parlays: The Chiefs and Patriots to Battle on NFL Opening Night
It’s been an interesting off-season in Kansas City Chiefs to say the least and now they get to test their mettle against the defending Super Bowl champions New England Patriots.
GM John Dorsey, the engineer of the team that’s finished above .500 in each of the four seasons he came over with Andy Reid to steady a sinking ship was fired. The pair finished 12-4 last year, winning their first division after three straight second place finishes. The Chiefs had finished fourth in four of the previous five seasons.
Before he was let go in June, he made S Eric Berry the highest paid at his position, traded up in the first round to take the expected successor to QB Alex Smith, Patrick Mahomes II, resigned coach Reid and released #1WR Jeremy Maclin. These are all the kinds of moves of a man who was not expecting to be let go.
The backbone of this team is the defense, who along with Berry have LBs Justin Houston and Derrick Johnson along with CB Phillip Gaines.
They will be tested mightily in the first game against a Tom Brady led offense that appears to have gotten much more dangerous in the offseason. And that’s saying something, considering that Brady was on pace to throw for 4736 yards had he not been suspended for the first four games of the season due to Deflategate. He also had an unbelievable 28-2 TD/INT ratio.
His security blanket Julian Edelman is out, but he has a healthy Rob Gronkowski to throw to and multiple speedsters at WR. That includes Brandin Cooks who they traded for with the Saints and steps in as the team’s most talented receiver since Randy Moss. They also traded for former first round pick Phillip Dorsett last week to replace Edelman. Chris Hogan was dynamite down the stretch of his rookie season and Danny Amendola is another sure handed receiver.
The Chiefs offense will run through Tyreek Hill, the dynamic playmaker now entering his second season. TE Travis Kelce is also one of the best tight ends in the league, although he’s been limited in practice. Spencer Ware was expected to carry the load at running back, but a knee injury in preseason ended his season. Rookie Kareen Hunt drafted in the third round gets the first crack at RB1.
They will go against a Patriots team that finished first allowing 15.6 PPG last year and appears to be stronger with the additions of LB David Harris who came over from the Jets and CB Stephon Gilmore who came from the Bills.
- Kansas City is 5-2 ATS in its last 7 games
Kansas City is 10-3 SU in its last 13 games
The total has gone UNDER in 9 of Kansas City’s last 13 games
- New England is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 games
New England is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games
The total has gone OVER in 4 of New England’s last 5 games
Cash It In: The Patriots are -9 favorites and have so much firepower at their disposal. The Chiefs have a talented defense, but seem limited on offense so it’s hard to see how they keep up over a full 60 minutes. Patriots 35-20.
