NFL Week 3 Opening Odds Analysis

What happens when you take away $100 million man Tony Romo and $70 million man Dez Bryant from the Dallas Cowboys lineup?

You get garbage at the skill positions and Atlanta opening as a road favorite against the 2-0 Cowboys.

The Falcons are 2-0, too, under new coach Dan Quinn. But they would have been around a touchdown underdog if the Cowboys had Romo and Bryant.

Romo is a top 12 quarterback. Brandon Weeden is a bottom 12 backup quarterback. Weeden never met a checkdown pass he didn’t like. Weeden’s NFL record as a starter is 5-16.

Bryant entered this season having caught 41 touchdown passes during the last three years, most of any receiver during this period.

Bucs Open as Big Underdogs in Houston

Tampa Bay upsetting New Orleans as a double-digit road underdog this past Sunday didn’t impress the oddsmaker. The Buccaneers opened as 6 1/2-point road underdogs to Houston. Look for that line to go higher if Arian Foster were to make his season debut.

The Texans have their own quarterback issues. Houston coach Bill O’Brien says he has two quarterbacks with Ryan Mallet and Brian Hoyer. In reality it can be said O’Brien really has no quarterbacks.

If you discount their betting lines against Jacksonville last season, the Texans were never higher than a six-point favorite in 2014.

The Buccaneers achieved their 26-19 victory against the Saints despite Mike Evans not catching a pass.

Early Money on Raiders Against Browns

The oddsmaker may have gotten a little overzealous opening Cleveland as a 4 1/2-point favorite against Oakland. Early Raiders money has pushed the number down to 3 1/2.

This is the ninth time in their last 23 games the Browns have been favored. They are 2-6-1 against the spread (ATS) in those games. Cleveland’s 28-14 victory against Tennessee this past Sunday was just the second time it has won in its last nine games.

Oakland, however, has lost its last 12 road/neutral site games going 5-7 ATS. The Raiders have been outscored, 130-27, during their past three away matchups. This is the Raiders’ first road contest of the season. It’s also one of the early Sunday start time games – not a plus for a traveling West Coast team.
