NHL All-Star Weekend Betting Preview

Although we won’t have the excitement of watching a 6’8” AHLer who can’t skate lumber his way around the ice this year, sportsbooks have released props and odds for the NHL All-Star Game and skills competition in Los Angeles so you don’t have to go a whole weekend without betting on hockey.

Bovada has all the lines you’ll need for the event, with everything from odds for individual matchups in the hardest shot and fastest skater competitions, to which division will win the tournament on Sunday. The Central Division/the Chicago Blackhawks are marked as the +200 favorites to win the three-on-three style tournament with the Metropolitan (+250), Pacific (+300) and Atlantic (+325) coming in behind them.

Going with the favorite in this type of situation always seems kind of silly to me. You never know how hard players are going to try and it’s usually the young guys that want to come out firing and make an impact. That being the case, I think the only bet I’ll be making on the tournament itself is on the +325 value of the Atlantic – despite the fact they have the subjectively worst roster.

With relatively unknown players on the team such as Vincent Trocheck and Frans Nielsen, they’ll want to prove they can compete with the top dogs and with Auston Matthews, Erik Karlsson and Carey Price leading the way, they aren’t hurting for talent. It’s rarely the best team that wins an all-star game and that was definitely the case last year when the NHL introduced the new format for All-Star Sunday and the John Scott led Pacific team won the whole thing.

Looking to Saturday’s skills competition you can pretty much bet on anything, except whether or not Patrick Kane will wear a ridiculous outfit during the shootout competition. I’ve listed the lines for some of my favorite bets at Bovada and the odds for the flagship tournament.
